Congratulations to one of our artists - Bill Metzgar, Project Manager for the Meyersdale Train Station in Meyersdale, PA. The official completion and oppening was Saturday, May 26. It is a job well done and we are proud of your accomplishment, Bill!!

This evening we welcomed advisor, Steve Fenstermacher, and new member, Regina Garber.

It was announced that there will be a "jurying" for PA Artists at Touchstone Center for the Arts, on June 7th. Bring items to be juried by 10 AM. They may be picked up at 1 PM. This is to jury in for the PA Handmade Along the Highway program.

PRAA Grant Writing Workshop dates were announced. We should try to attend at least one of these sessions. Our next deadline for a PRAA Grant is June 30th.

There is a need to set up committees for our group. If you are willing to help out with any aspect, please let Jan Lloyd, Kitty Stemac, or Joan know soon. Committees: Grants, Information Dissemenation, Music for Events, Memberships, Publicity, Scrapbook of PATH events.

To the Artists:

We had a wonderful Gathering April 14, 2007, at Aurelia, with 13 artists in attendance. Many thanks to all who came out on this rainy Saturday to share their time, talents, and input with the group.

Following our new meeting format, all who attended were brought up to date regarding the progress Path has made since the last gathering. It was announced that Marcy Kalasky has volunteered to act as recording secretary. The group was informed that our current bank balance for March 2007 is now over $700.00. We all shared our disappointment in learning that we were not awarded the Somerset County Hotel Tax Grant, applied for in January. Joan read a letter submitted (at Commissioner Cober’s suggestion) to the Somerset County Commissioners Office, requesting funding for the upcoming events. We hope to hear soon! There were suggestions to re-word it a bit and send it to State Representative Bob Bastain and Senator Richard Kasunic, so that has been done.
Rick Kasunic’s office printed out a grant form for PRAA due June 30. We must tie in the educational aspect of our PATH goals, so please give us your input. It was suggested that we might be able to use the Methodist Church to offer classes to be given by our members. If you have an interest in educating the public about your craft and let us know so we can all explore it further.

Our first event is coming upon us in no time at all! This PATH event is advertised on placemats, flyers, 5 different radio, 5 different newspapers, and TV channels 2,4,and 6. It was suggested that each artist make a 2’ x 4’ banner, any style or medium that can be displayed during events as an attractive addition to our show areas.
We currently have 14 confirmed artists for our first annual National Road Festival Fine Arts Show and Sale to be held during the National Pike Festival. We will be displaying and selling our wares in the Frederick Augustine Welcoming Center/History House, Humberson School House, and if necessary, the grounds of these buildings for our event. Table spaces are obtainable in 4’ increments (1/2 table). For this first show there will be no charge to PATH members, and non-members may be included for a $20 fee per table, or $10 per 1/2. There are still several spaces available for use, but if you want to be involved, the application deadline has been extended to the May 5th set-up meeting. Bathrooms are available for participating artists in the Welcome Center; Port-a-potties for patrons are located in church parking lot. We are still seeking musicians to perform at Saturday’s event. If you are interested, please call!
We are expecting a high consumer turnout for our PATH Fine Arts Show and Sale being held during the National Pike Chainsaw Carving Festival. Through the kind cooperation of OPAHS, PATH will again have access to the above mentioned sites. Please commit as soon as possible for either or both of these festivals, as space will not last long.
Our Maryland contingent asked about how to handle the PA Sales Tax. We have researched this and have a brochure available for all our out-of-state people, or you can check out the info at: www.revenue.state.pa.us/revenue/lib/revenue/rev-778.pdf. Additionally, we have spoken to Tony Rovito with the PA Revenue Dept’s Vendor Enforcement Program, who will send you the RAV 518 form. Call him at (717) 787-6793.

Joan gave a brief history of James Black Pottery from Somerfield, PA, and suggested that it is extremely important for artists to sign their work. The business portion of our gathering concluded at 7pm, and we retired to the tavern room for ham, biscuits, and great conversation.

The website has been up for just about three months, and as of this afternoon we have had over 1600 unique visitors view our ‘Meet the Artist’ page. We recently added some new members to our Meet the Artist page, so log on and get acquainted! PATH needs additional artists represented on our pages to give us more visual weight as we prepare to apply for grants and funding to benefit our regional art community (That means you), so please take the responsibility of supporting our group by sending in your dues, a bio, and a jpeg of your work. The website exposes your work to a huge number of potential customers, offers you information on sales and show venues, grant and funding opportunities, and other pre-filtered resources all in one, easily accessible place. You might consider setting up a free website that will link to patharts.org, as an online gallery of your work, to attract customers into your studio.

We invite and encourage you to attend the Gatherings. If you know of other artists who might be interested in our group, please feel free to offer them an invitation.

As always, we welcome your input and suggestions,

The PATH Steering Committee

February 2007 PATH Newsletter                                                     Volume I, Number II
To the Artist:

Kudos to the twenty-seven hardy people who braved the snow and ice to show their interest in and support of PATH by coming to our Feb 9 meeting at Jan and Kevin Lloyd’s home. We had first time attendees Nils, Frances, and Lilly Thompson from Hannah House B&B, Elle Bookout, Mary Lynn Hajduk, Linda Marker, Connie and Frank Stark, and Marcy Kalasky. Welcome! Many thanks to the gracious artists who brought and shared their artistic talents with the group. At future gatherings, we would love to encourage you to bring an example of your work so that we all can become familiar with and promote one another.

Two artists in our group have received commissions as a direct result of PATH membership and networking.

Since the last gathering the Laurel Highlands Visitor’s Bureau / Somerset County Tourism Bureau marketing grant application has been written and submitted by the PATH Support Committee. We have been in contact with the directors of Pennsylvania Rural Arts Alliance and Pennsylvania Council on the Arts seeking assistance and information regarding funding and grant opportunities. We are in the grant writing process to help fund our 2007/2008 festivals, and help establish our 501c3 non profit status. We are researching our options regarding the 501c3, non-profit status and hope to have that resolved in the near future.

Have you checked out your Website at www.patharts.org? It is working hard to represent the artists who have who have taken advantage of PATH membership benefits, and has already received over 442 unique visitors! We can not encourage you enough to have your art represented by a photo and bio on this site. It not only benefits you personally, but enhances the effect of the group as a whole by giving visible weight to our cause. What a wonderful marketing tool for your creative expression. To be included on our Meet the Artist page, please send a 75 word (approx) bio, and a jpg representation of your work to artists@patharts.org, along with your dues to PATH at PO Box 164, Addison, PA 15411. We have expanded the website to include a Calendar of Events and Classified Ads. If you have any info you would like included on the site, please email your request.

At our next meeting we will be trying to firm up our plans for our 2007/2008 festivals and shows, and hope to have a guest speaker. We want you to share your experience, ideas, and hopes for the direction of PATH, so come be part of a wonderful beginning. The gathering will be March 15, at the Hartzell House Bed and Breakfast, 728 Main St, Addison. We will begin at 6:15, and have a time of networking and socializing following the business portion of our meeting for those who wish to stay.

We look forward to seeing you there,

The PATH Support Committee

January 2007 PATH Newsletter                                                        Volume I, Number I
To the Artist:

It has been a very busy time since our last Artist’s Gathering and we have addressed some of the issues from that meeting that needed action. As you can see, we have a new post office box and a new website! Our first patron has provided us with a $200 donation and thus we have opened a bank account at Somerset Trust in Confluence.

To get things up and running, we have instituted a temporary Support Committee consisting of seven positions and hope to encourage volunteers who will add to our knowledge base and accept responsibility for defined positions for a one year term. Our goal is to have a Board of Directors elected annually by the membership starting in 2008.

We have developed our mission statement: The Participating Artists of the Turkeyfoot Highlands exists to advocate, support, preserve, promote and enhance the artists and art of the southern Laurel Highlands within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and surrounding areas. We seek to be inclusive and provide marketing, event and sales venues, professional development opportunities, information, education, and other resources as well as value-adding services to our members to ensure their, and the indigenous arts and crafts heritage of the area, ongoing growth and success. We feel this accurately expresses our organizations goals and furthers our purpose of seeking funding and obtaining a non-profit status.

We’ve put together a Member and Supporter database with twenty categories. We currently have a roster of 80 artistically diverse individuals representing many different disciplines from Stained Glass to Blacksmithing, Pottery to Painting, Culinary to Performing Arts, and beyond. The PATH is open to anyone, either creative or supportive, who is interested in the Arts. PATH membership will provide mass marketing by inclusion on our website, and all PATH members will be provided with an individual space on our Meet the Artist page in which to convey a short biography, one photo, contact information, and their website link. Additionally, the PATH Support Committee is working to afford networking and partnering opportunities, event and sales venues, marketing and communications services, education, plus governmental affairs information and representation to its membership. We have defined Strategic and Marketing Plans that will be used to market our art, apply for grants, and help to achieve our goal of acquiring a physical property in which to house a gallery, teaching studio, and complimentary establishments within the foreseeable future.

Our thought at this point is that in exchange for these benefits, members would pay annual dues in the amounts of $15.00 individual, $20.00 family, $5.00 Student. Dues will go toward further web-site development and upkeep, marketing products, event, and overhead costs.

These issues and others will be discussed at the next gathering, so please plan to attend!

The February Gathering will be held at 6pm on the 9th, at the home of Jan and Kevin Lloyd, 745 Main St, Addison. If you wish to bring a snack it will be appreciated. Artists are asked to bring a representation of their work if they so desire.

March Gathering is slated for 6pm Thursday, March 15th, at the Hartzell House Bed and Breakfast, 728 Main St, Addison. In honor of St Patrick’s Day, green beer and wine will be served. If you wish to bring a snack it will be appreciated. If you have an Irish tune to play or tale to tell, come prepared.

We look forward to seeing you,

The PATH Support Committee
