Watercolor Workshop: Painting Landscapes & Botanic Materials
Gina Clapp, Instructor
Saturday, July 26, 2008
10:00am – 2:00pm
Gina Clapp, the instructor, has taught watercolor painting and drawing to adults for 18 years at the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop in Washington, DC. She also does a summer intensive workshop in the Chalk Hill, PA area every year.
Gina is a practicing artist and a member of the Potomac Valley Watercolor Association, the Art League of Alexandria, and the Art League of Capitol hill. Her work is in public and private collections in the United States, Europe, and Asia.
In this workshop the students will consider how to compose an INTERESTING landscape painting – covering such topics as what to include and leave out of the composition and what colors and techniques best suggest mood and atmosphere. For those artists interested in detail, there will be a discussion of botanical painting of flowers and trees. Detail, paper, and “difficult” colors, especially green, will be considered.
The weather will determine whether the workshop is held inside or outside.
Each student should bring the following supplies:
- Watercolor brushes, ranging from size 4 to 12. They must have a good spring to the bristles. (That is, if you push the bristles to one side, they should return to a full upright position immediately when released.)
- Paints and a plastic palette (Winsor Newton paints, which come in tubes are preferred). A large palette is important so that there is room to mix paint colors.
- Cold press watercolor paper in a tablet. (Strathmore brand is good.) Choose a larger size tablet like 14” by 17”.
- A “natural” sponge, tissues AND paper towels, and a large water container (like a coffee can).
- A 2B drawing pencil and a quality (NOT kneaded) eraser.
- An old, small terry cloth towel.

For all levels of experience or none!
Class will consist of two seperate sessions:
In session one we will create the work and in session two glaze it. The time between is for drying and the bisque process, which will be provided by the studio. Students will learn the rudiments of clay and will be encouraged to share their own experience (if any). They will create a finished hand built piece of functional stoneware, uniques to themselves. The inspiration for this will be taken from the surrounding beauty of the woods.
Cost:
$10.00 to PATH - $15.00 to Dancing Trees Studios for materials and firing.
If you have some clay tools of your own you may bring them, but the studio has plenty on hand. Wear old clothes, you will get dirty!
